Missions and the Sawi

Missionaries, like Don and Carol, try and change the minds of people, without changing the culture. The goal of a missionary is not to force people under their control, so the can develop foreign thrones of gold where they will sit and drink pineapple juice all day. The goal of a missionary is to forget one self and become obedient to Christ, as he was obedient to the cross. Missionary’s are not out to please themselves, but to please others. What missions do for these people is help them live longer, more physically and spiritually. That is evident from the novel Peace Child, Don once stood up in the middle of a fight to make sure that these people would not die without hearing the true word. And he succeeded too. He stopped the fight, and cured the man that was wounded. That is the work of a true missionary. Like I said before, Missionaries don’t change the culture, they need to change the Word to fit into the culture. The Sawi would never have believed what Don had said had he not linked Jesus to the Peace child. When Don hadn’t mentioned the Peace child, they regarded Judas as the hero. But when the concept of the Peace Child were associated with Jesus, Judas suddenly became the evil one. When missionary’s change themselves for the culture and have every intention of helping it, that’s when God’s plan can be accomplished.

Hey, this is Joseph
and wow you seem to know a lot about the missionaries and their missions. I think being Missionary is the hardest occupation one can have because if a missionary isn't brave enough to speak in front of the wild people or did not have great communicating skill, he or she could never convert the Sawi tribes. I once tried to evangelize a game shop owner back in the states, however i was so nervous, that i couldn't speak well. If you were a missionary would you have the courage to speak in front of a cannibalistic people?

I suppose you as an MK know through primary experience about what it takes to be a missionary. I agree with what you had to say about missionaries not changing the foreign culture, but use the culture, no matter how strange it may be, to create a vision of Christ to make it more accessible to the people. Don Richardson first could not see how he could use the Sawi culture to share the gospel at first. He wondered if medical aid was all he could do to help the Sawi tribes. But God showed the way by revealing the secrets of the peace child and the words of remon. With God by his side, Don Richardson took the initiative to bravely step forward and share the Word. And we all know how it ended: more than half of the Sawi tribesmen are now Christians. God works in even the most impossible situations and make it work. All we can do is to depend on him wholeheartedly and humbly. That is what mission is all about, right? God's amazing like that.

KEEP POSTING! Joseph don't let that one experience stop you from sharing the Gospel - your life in itself is a testimony to God's grace. Fear is often what the devil uses to control us. God gives us the courage to overcome our fears if we trust Him. Mrs.Mc
